Nuclear Voice Mail

by Ken Sanes

Please keep the bomb away from our door,
because nothing again will ever be right
when day is plunged into a starless night
and life is put on perpetual hold,
while voice mail repeats the same recorded choice,
but now with words that are the only story told
by the last remaining voice:

“Due to unusually heavy call volume,
your wait to speak to an agent will be longer than expected.
Please press one for nuclear winter.
Press two for the ruins of burned out cities.
Press three for horrific mutations.
Or press four to leave a message for customer service,
and we will get back to you as soon as someone is available….”
