They fly in eight hours
by Ken Sanes
They fly in eight hours
Over the Himalayas
And follow the valleys
On their spring migration
With GPS transmitters
Sending back signals
These bar-headed geese
Anser indicus flying
Honking and sending
Avoiding the summits
And ninety one up there
So we’ll know their location
And how high they’re flying
Swooping and rising
Although still it's a challenge
Producing power to travel
In a life’s common journey
As they seek out the valleys
To avoid flying higher
And get at the Anser
Who rarely use headwinds
Incessantly flapping
Energetic half graceful
But swooping and rising
